MODULE ONE - Understanding the Child In Context
At the end of this module the student should have an introductory overview of the key areas of the course - child development, listening to children, a biblical understanding of children, risk and resilience, rights from a Christian perspective.
Participants look at the child as a whole person and understand how children see themselves.
They consider the factors in a child's environment that influence growth and development and how the actions of a caregive can help a child in spite of circumstances that a child may be experiencing.
And participants study different theoretical frameworks of child development as well as what the Bilble says about children.

Understanding God's Heart for Children
The ‘Childhood’ series of books published by Wiley and Open University are textbooks for their BA Hons in Childhood & Youth Studies degree. They are useful for trainers and can be purchased direct from Wiley www.wiley.com
- Understanding Childhood - An Interdisciplinary Approach. This asks What is a Child? and intrduces a range of perspectives within childhood studies. Topics include history of beliefs about childhood, the growth of the scientific approach to studying children, the significance of gender, debates around children’s rights and how far children are seen as innocent or knowing
- Childhoods in Context - The text examines the interplay between family, work, schooling and other influences in the daily lives of children and young people. Topics include changing family patterns, debates about school vs. work, and current concerns about child labour. Issues in early childhood are also discussed, as well as transition from child to adult.
- Children’s Cultural Worlds - This book looks at the distinctiveness of children’s cultural world’s by exploring the everyday activities of young children through to teenagers. Topics include friendships and the significance of play, how children use language to construct relationships and identities, the role of print literature, other media and info technology in children’s every day lives and their growing power as consumers.
- Changing Childhoods - considers the status of children in society, and the significance of children’s rights, recognizing that childhood is both a local experience and a global concern. Topics include the effects of poverty and other adversities, including violence on children’s health and well-being. Finally the book illustrates the way in which children and young people become engaged with social issues, including issues surrounding their status.
